(Formation of first ad-hoc committee)
'lhochhar' - 'New Year' is the greatest festival in the Gurung
community. The word 'lho' denotes the year and 'chhar' means new. So,
lhochhar means New Year. After the harvest, the Gurungs at the
periphery of the mountain Himalayas observe the New Year. Usually, 30
December is the lhochhar day. On 27 December 1999, first meeting was
held in order to observe the lho-chhar celebration. In the meeting the
following frecis youths were present:
Min Prasad, Min
Bahadur, Khem (now in Nepal), Rajkaji, Hitkaji, Chandra Bahadur,
Prakash, Dipak, Surya, Nabin, Kamal, Himal, GCO Major L B, Capt (QGO)
Ash Bahadur, Professor Chandra Bahadur. So, on 2nd January 2000 the
first lho-chhar celebration was held by the UK tamus. It was a small
family gathering. In the same general assembly the following person
were chosen in ad-hoc committee at the then Gurkha Village and
presently said Gurkha Cottage Restaurant for a period of a year:

The ad-hoc committee tenure of office was fixed for a year. The
Committee was entrusted to complete mainly the three jobs (1) to
prepare the constitution and register the association under British
Charity Act (2) formation of new Executive Committee and advisors under
new constitution (for the year 2001/2002) and (3) to regulate other
routine and benovelement activities. In the same assembly Mr Pradip
Patel and Professor Chandra Bahadur Gurung were assigned for drafting
the constitution and register the Association. The assigned job was
done in time.
FORMATION OF FIRST EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
(10 December 2000 for the year 2001/2002)
After formerly registered the Association under Company Act, under the
new constitution on 10 December 2000 the full-fledged Executive
Committee and co-ordinators were elected at Everest Restaurant in
Farnborough. In the same general assembly the advisors were also
chosen. In the constitution the tenure of office was fixed for two
years. The following tamus were elected for the year 2001/2002:

2nd lhochhar celebration
In January 2001 after the election of full fledged Executive Member and
the Advisors the second lhochhar was celebrated at Cannaught School
Aldershot. On that occasion the volleyball competition was held. Mrs
Manju was the co-ordinator of the sport. In the evening many vocal
artist performed their song and dance. Among them noteworthy were Bibek
Shrestha of Kandara band; Sharmila Bardewa, Gagan, Madhanya; and
Bhairaja Lekali band. In that day the chief guest was His Excellency
Singbahadur Basnyat, the Ambassador of Nepal to Great Britain. His
Excellency distributed the prizes. Nearly 700 people had been gathered
in the function.
His Majesty's Government, Ministry of
Law, in Kathmandu, officially translated the English version of
constitution into Nepali. Full text of constitution English original
and the Nepali translation is published in the first issue of tamudhee
magazine 'Freci'.
In January 2002 the third lho-chhar
celebration was held at Princes Hall Aldershot. The guest artist was Mr
Amrit Gurung, the famous vocal artist of Nepathe Band. The programme
was thoroughly enjoyed. After the lhochhar event the next cultural
programme the rodhee sansar' was shown at Maidstone on the kind
invitation of Gurkha Engineers.
FORMATION OF 3RD EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
On 24 November 2002, the 3rd Executive Committee was elected. The
meeting was held at Oval School and following tamus were declared
elected in executive for the year 2003/2004:

The 4th lho-chhar was observed on 25 January 2004 at Frimley, Lakeside
Hotel. In the celebration the famous vocal artist Nima Rumba was the
main artist. Nearly 1,500 tamus and other well-wishers thoroughly
enjoyed the programme. Later it was known that two serving Gurkha
soldiers taking 94 hours leave one from Kosovo and other from Iraq
exclusively came to participate in the lhochhar celebration. In the
same function the second issue of 'Fresi' magazine was distributed.
This is conventional practice that each year the Association invites
His Excellency the Nepalese Ambassador to Great Britain and the Mayor
of Rushmoor Borough Council as the guest of honour. Presently, more
than 300 ordinary and 100 life members have been associated with the
Association. The association annually observe the three annual events
(1) lhochhar celebration (2) Gurkha Cup Football Tournament and (3)
Barbecue. Besides this occasionally the association performs other
activities according the time and situation. The Association make
time-to-time gathering with the life members. During meeting there
prevail an exchange of ideas among the members so as to function the
activities effectively. During his Majesty's unofficial visit in the UK
on behalf the Association the President, Vice President, Secretary and
the advisors went Nepalese Embassy in London and grace the audience
with their Majesties the King and the Queen. The Association also
offered a well come dinner party in honour of newly appointed the
Nepalese Ambassador to Great Britain His Excellency Prabal Shamsher
JBR.
The Association would like to communicate this
message through this website. The Association would like to appeal to
all the well-wishers to give your big hand for the support of this
organisation. The Association needs your valuable suggestion in order
to achieve the common objectives of the community. Presently, by
mobilising the internal resources and aspiration of each and every
individual of the community the association is planning to manage a
property in order to regulate the day to day administrative of the
Association. We appeal you to participate in this common endeavour so
as to make effective to full fill the noble objectives. The Association
appreciate your valuable suggestion so as to correct the error.
